2) Complete concussion certification

4) Complete certification test
5) Complete SafeSport certification (if 18 years or older)

Must be at least 14 years old in August or entering the 9th grade or later

Cost is $20 and will be payable at the in-person training session. Cash, check, or venmo will accepted at the in-person training sessions. See next section for referee uniform pack payment.

Go to https://tinyurl.com/WCSA24 to register for an in-person training session

Additional Information
During in-person training sessions, attendees will be trained to referee their first games with a whistle. It is important to do the SAY online training modules as that material covers the rules, and in-person training covers game management.

Those certified will be trained to referee Passers & Wings level games in the first couple weeks of the season. Starting pay range for first year referees ranges from $22-$26 per game.

Great opportunity for parents to get certified with their kids. We will work to schedule parent/kid duos on the same games, or at least at the same location.

Referee Gear & Uniforms
WCSA has limited referee uniform packs available for purchase at the in-person training sessions. Packs include a Yellow Uniform Shirt, Socks, and Card/Wallet Set. Purchase through WCSA provides a discounted rate compared to separate purchase. Cost is $30 for the pack, payable at training to pickup the day-of.

Purchase is not required through WCSA, but merely an option provided. If any shirt sizes in stock run out, WCSA will look to place an order to maintain the discounted rate. All packs/shirt sizes are first come, first serve at each training session.

Step 1 (SAY Referee Online Training Modules)
Sections 1 through 5 of the online training modules must be completed before attending an in-person session.

CLICK HERE to access the training.

Each section has a presentation in PDF or PowerPoint mode, followed by a knowledge check. Read through the presentation in each section, then take the knowledge check for that section. After each knowledge check, please record your score for each section and have available at the in-person training session. The results of the knowledge check will only be used for future training improvements and will not be shared with others.

Step 2 (Concussion Certification)
All referees must complete concussion training as required by law. This training is approximately 30 minutes and must be completed online. Training is good for 3 years and is required before officiating any games.

The FIRST APPROVED OPTION is provided by the National Federation of State High School Associations Concussion in Sports – What You Need to Know, which can be found at NFHSlearn.com. This online course will require you to click on the “order here” button to begin the training. It will ask you to complete a brief registration form prior to beginning the course, which is solely for the purpose of registering you in their data base as having successfully completed the online material. After you have completed this course, you will be given the option to print out a personalized certificate of completion (It is suggested that this certificate be printed out in pdf format, otherwise your name may not appear on this certificate).

The SECOND APPROVED OPTION is through the Center for Disease Control and their Prevention Heads Up Concussion in Youth Sports Online training program, which is at www.cdc.gov/headsup/youthsports/training/index.html. Click on the online training course button to begin your training. After successfully completing the on-line training, you will be offered an opportunity to print out a personalized “certificate of completion”. FYI – this option does not keep a record of your completing this training.

After completing either the FIRST OR SECOND APPROVED OPTION, you will need to print out your personalized “certificate of completion” and keep a copy with you at ALL games. Save a copy in PDF format as well.

Instructions will be provided at training on how to submit the PDF version.

Steps 4 & 5 (Certification Test & SafeSport Training)

Certification Test
After you have completed the online training and attended an in-person session as described above, you will receive a specific testing link to complete the certification test. This will only be sent after completing an in-person training session.

SafeSport Training
All referees over the age of 18 are required to complete SafeSport Training as required by law. This training takes a couple hours and must be completed before officiating any games. Information for this training will be provided to those necessary following an in-person training session, or please email wcsareferee@gmail.com if you would like to complete before in-person training. There are specific instructions for accessing this training and is provided at no cost.
